Raymi — Peruvian Cuisine

Okay, I’ll admit it — I was very nervous to go out to dinner on Friday night. Peruvian food isn’t exactly something I am familiar with; and after menu-stalking I was a bit overwhelmed. After reading over several ingredients I either didn’t know the word/translation or I couldn’t seem to envision what the plate would taste like. I even found myself re-reading over “habanero.” The embarrassing part: I know what a habanero is. I know how to grow the plant in my backyard. I know just a small amount of this pepper will clear out my sinuses. But yet, I was so overwhelmed by the menu I had to look at the word “habanero” multiple times.

Within only a couple of minutes of being at the restaurant, I knew my dinner was in great hands. The servers at Raymi have perfected how to describe every dish, they know how to pair your food with Peruvian-style cocktails, and over-all they are brilliant at making your Peruvian dinner a memorable one.

You can easily get away with eating the entire meal in a tapas-style sort of way. Our first dish: Causa of the day. Lobster was the catch of the day and the fish was placed over a cold aji amarillo potato puree. The rich, creamy texture of the lobster and potato puree was outstanding — but to add some extra flavor and crunch to the plate the chef added some roasted dehydrated corn. These little bites of crunchy corn was so delicious! I wish they were sold at the grocery store!

My boyfriend did a little bit of Yelp’ing before heading to dinner and everyone was raving about the restaurant’s Peruvian Corn Cake plate. It seemed like such a hit, so obviously we put this at the top of our list of plates to order.

The corn cake is topped with a mushroom ragout and watercress leaves. It’s incredible how all of the flavors fuse together so beautifully — especially on this dish. Without the peppery taste of the watercress, the mushrooms and corn cake wouldn’t have that necessary zing. And I’m sure you are thinking about the texture of this “corn cake,” and let me assure you it’s nothing like a corn muffin or corn bread that we typically eat in the U.S. This corn cake doesn’t have the distinctive grainy consistency and is smooth and creamy and makes it easier to pick up the rest of the ingredients on your fork. I would be happy to order this plate and eat it as my lunch or dinner — funny enough, one of the hosts said she did just that the night before! This plate seems to be a hit for those dining at the restaurant and those working there!

And since Friday was date-night for me and my Valentine, the tapas style dinner made it more romantic. Sharing food and talking about your favorite plates makes a dinner so much more intimate. Which is why I loved the Ceviche & Tiraditos Tasting plate. This plate allows you to pick a total of 4 items from the ceviche and tiraditos section of the menu. Our choice (clock-wise from the top left): *the first one was my boyfriend’s pick and I forgot to try it, fluke, tuna and salmon. The manager recommended we eat these with a spoon — and boy was he right! Eating ceviche with a spoon rather than a fork allows you to scoop up the extra citrus juices at the bottom of the bowl — this gives the fish a refreshing flavor. This tasting plate couldn’t have been more of a hit between the two of us!

And, a close-up of the tuna:

Another brilliant appetizer to share between 2 people was the Hanger Steak — specifically it’s skewered hanger steak seared and served with aji panca glaze, creamy ocopa sauce and rocoto salsa. Wowza — this plate sure was full of flavor! It tasted as if the hanger steak was soaking and marinating in the most complex mixture of seasonings and spices before being cooked. Hands-down this was the most flavorful piece of meat I have tasted in a very long time! In addition to the  Peruvian Corn Cake, this Hanger Steak is a must-order!

For our “main dish” the two of us shared the Chaufa Completo — which is served with jasmine rice, chicken char siu, shrimp and chinese sausage. I dug in around the sausage but the overall plate was just bursting with exotic flavors. I knew right from the start the jasmine rice was going to add subtle but important flavorings to this plate.

Even though we had just a bit of leftovers, sharing all of these plates together completely satisfied us for dinner.

Over course we had to end our evening with dessert. We followed the manager’s suggestion and ordered the Peruvian Crispy Donuts. I know what you’re thinking — donuts are such a big food trend these can’t be anything other than ordinary, blah blah blah. But you’re wrong! Yes, donuts are such a food fad these days but Raymi adds a perfect, sweet, twist to the homemade dessert. Honey is the ingredient that makes these donuts have a natural sweetness — I guarantee that you’ll agree with me that these donuts are anything but ordinary!

I’m sure you are overwhelmed reading this post — because you can see how much I truly enjoyed my first dinner at a Peruvian restaurant. I’m sure you have also noticed that Peruvian food is highly influenced by the Asian culture and cuisine! Who would have thought that a blend of Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, West African and Italian cuisines would be brought to the country of Peru and all of these cultures have been an influence on the food that is made throughout the country to this very day.  Luckily, for me, I found that Peruvian food seems to have a stronger influence from the Japanese — I’m not a huge fan of Chinese cuisine, but Japanese I love! There’s nothing like beautiful cuts of raw fish tossed in citrus and served fresh!

Melt Shop Grilled Cheese

Let’s get right to the point — Little Muenster has some major competition. Just like cupcakes, grilled cheese sandwiches aren’t just a food trend — they are a classic comfort food that has been pleasing many for generations. Which is why it isn’t a surprise to me that grilled cheese shops are popping up all across town.

The credit here goes to my boyfriend who found Melt Shop just around the corner on West 26th Street. That’s the first major plus, I didn’t have to go all the way downtown like I did for Little Muenster. Convenience is key. I also appreciated the speediness of the service and the wide selection of sandwich choices.  What’s even more exciting? They offer a breakfast menu as well — something that I need to try out! To see the entire menu, click here!

Knowing what types of food I love… take a wild guess at what I ordered.

truffle grilled cheese

Yup — I went for the Truffle Melt… a grilled cheese made up of havarti, arugula, and cracked black pepper that has truffle oil drizzled on top, all melted together in between two pieces of sourdough bread. Did you know, if you add truffle to dairy the flavor really pops? So, what could be better than cheese and truffle? Hmmm, probably nothing.

The sourdough bread had the perfect crispiness after it came out of the sandwich press, and the arugula added the perfect greenery to the grilled cheese.

Looking for something with a little more substance? Melt Shop offers grilled cheeses made with meat — chicken, pork… you name it!

So, I leave you with this thought — what could be better than a warm grilled cheese on a cold winter day? These sandwiches really hit the spot and take the grilled cheese food trend to a whole new level.

What’s to come…

I have lots of pictures, and lots of typing to do — you’ll see everything over the next couple of weeks in a variety of posts. Lets just say this — one month, 3 fabulous cities. That’s right, I am a dedicated New York City lover, but I ventured to new restaurants not only in my favorite city — but I did the same in Boston and San Francisco.

New cities, new restaurants, new adventures. And, my favorite part — exploring different food markets! We all know how much I love The Chelsea Market located in [the best neighborhood] Manhattan, but I was able to explore other gems, like the Quincy Market in Boston and The Ferry Building’s farmers market in San Fran.

In case you can’t wait to see my posts, feel free to follow me on Instagram to get a sneak peek of my pictures! Thanks to the setup of Instagram’s new web feature, you can follow my pictures via mobile or online!!! Plus, almost all of these photos aren’t shared on Twitter!

Happy National Donut Day!

I have to get something straight with everyone right away — I am not obsessed with donuts. I actually maybe eat two or three a year (if that). Yes, two or three — one during a road trip home to Hershey, one in the JFK airport and one on National Donut Day — those were the exact times this year that I have eaten a donut.

the donut plant coconut donut

And since today marks National Donut Day… today was one of my days I ate a donut. To be more specifically, I ate a donut from the Doughnut Plant. There are two Doughnut Plants: one in Chelsea and one in the Lower East Side. They are both fantastic and busy and full of the most uniquely flavored donuts you will ever taste. Flavors like blueberry, “rose doughseeds,” pistachio, peanut butter, creme brulee, and more!

Today, I decided to go with a flavor I have been a bit obsessed with this summer — Coconut! Wow, yes, I said coconut!

I was surprised that the coconut flavor wasn’t over-powering. Instead, it was a sweet, sugary coconut flavor that was glazed over a light and fluffy donut dough (if you have had a pina colada, you’re all set — if only there was rum on the inside of the donut!). What was on the inside? Coconut cream! Wait, what? Coconut cream? On the inside of a square-shaped donut? Yup, that’s correct! And the owner of the Doughnut Plant won’t tell us how he got that cream on the inside of his square donut. It’s a mystery I am happy with because the donut was unbelievably delicious and was the perfect solution to quench my coconut-obsessed taste-buds!

Whether it’s National Donut Day or not… This donut shop is so tasty, it might be a place you just have to stop at when you visit NYC!

Claw’s Lobster Mac & Cheese

On my way home from a friend’s birthday dinner I passed by Claw — a restaurant that I walk by every single day but have yet to go in. (I pass by every morning when I commute to the subway.) It was 11:15 p.m. and I wasn’t even hungry and I all of a sudden got a huge hankering for lobster mac and cheese. I clearly knew what was on the menu because after reading about the joint on Thrillist, followed by reading several rave reviews on Yelp, I knew I needed to stop it.

Immediately after walking in I noticed how spectacularly clean the restaurant is. It’s only made up of a few tables and it’s definitely an in-and-out sort of joint… no way whatsoever is this a place where you go to sit for a long drawn-out meal. You can also see right into the kitchen — the chefs must have OCD because there wasn’t even food any where to be seen (it was that clean!). Since Claw is open until midnight, there were still people dropping in to pick up some late-night food, from the hard-working business man that just left his office, to a group of what looked like book-club ladies that happened to have strolled in.

Of course Lobster is going to be pricey. Luke’s Lobster truck is pretty much priced the same as Claw, except 1. your lobster comes from a truck, 2. you can’t sit down to eat it, 3. there isn’t a wide menu selection like there is at Claw, 4. There is less lobster in Luke’s serving than Claw’s.

I was all of a sudden craving lobster like you wouldn’t believe. And obviously I had come to the right place where everything is made with lobster — lobster rolls, lobster mac and cheese, lobster quesadillas, lobster bisque, etc etc. But I had to stay calm and think to myself “I will come back, no need to order everything on the menu.” So I stuck with just the Lobster Mac & Cheese and I ordered to go because it was getting late and was about to rain.

I spoke with one of the chefs/owners of the place — a very young guy who was telling me that him and his friends (chefs/other owners) graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and had opened this joint together. Claw in Chelsea is doing so well, they are thinking about opening another location in Midtown! I hope this happens — it would be nice to have more good food options up in the neighborhood where everyone is working. These friends/chefs/owners really know how to cook lobster — they clearly mastered the art of cooking seafood, the proof is in every single bite.

So I ordered the lobster mac and cheese and headed home. I live only a few blocks away but when I walked out Claw’s door the sky opened up and the biggest rain drops I have ever seen started to fall from the sky. It was such a gorgeous night, not having an umbrella didn’t bother me one bit.

When I got home, I opened up my take-out container, turned around to grab a fork and when I went to dig in Mr. Hudson was sniffing down the gigantic lobster claw that was on the top of the macaroni. HUDSON! I DON’T THINK SO! No way was this cat going to chow down on that lobster, sorry buddy.

types of macaroni

I was fairly surprised with the choice of macaroni used in this dish. I don’t know why, but I found it pretty different since I’ve never seen Campanelle pasta used in a lobster mac and cheese before (I was also comparing to Catch’s choice of elbow macaroni — I thought their lobster mac and cheese was good… but Claw’s is out of this world!). For those who can’t picture campanelle pasta, it’s the type of pasta that looks like “church bells,” actually the literal translation of campanelle in Italian is “little bells.” (Fun interesting fact for you.) But to my surprise the campanelle was an amazing choice since it did a great job holding on to the lobster and the cheese! After googling what the pasta should be used for, I discovered that the noodle is best in a dish with a thick sauce! And the chef cooked it perfectly, obviously the macaroni was in a to-go container for about 15 minutes, it was hot enough to keep cooking a bit while I carried it home — but the campanelle wasn’t soggy or mushy, it was perfect Al Dente.

The lobster flavor was perfectly infused into every single bite. And large chunks of fresh lobster was distributed around the noodles. Not to mention, there was a claw that was used to top off the macaroni! The brioche bread crumbs that were added to the top add another great texture to the plate as well. So, you have the rich, creamy, crunchy, savory lobster mac and cheese — now what!? Now, I need to return for a lobster roll and lobster quesadillas! The freshness and quality of the food just blew me away, there’s no way I can stay away from this restaurant!

A few more things: I loved the decor in the restaurant. Guess what color was used on the booths… CORAL! It reminded me of the beach, the summer, and it overall completed the ambience!

Since there are only a few tables to sit at, if it’s busy just take the food to-go. I’m always hesitant about taking my food to-go because I am convinced the food tastes differently, but the food carried out at Claw remains perfectly fresh!

Ravioli Round-Up

It was recently brought to my attention how much I blog about ravioli. So, when I typed in “Ravioli” in my blog’s search, I discovered my friend was right… I am obsessed with ordering this type of dish! So, I thought I’d do a round up of my favorites over the past couple of months so if you have a hankering or an obsession like I do — then you’ll know exactly where to go for the best plate!

1. The best ravioli dish I believe that I have had while living in New York City (and I recently ate it only a couple of months ago) was from my favorite Italian restaurant, Perbacco! Perbacco is in the Lower East Side and they change their menu seasonally, so you know that the food is going to be nothing but fresh and full of flavor! This ravioli — Ravioli di Zucca con Salsiccia which is kabocha squash ravioli sauteed in brown butter sauce and italian sausage served with amaretto foam on the side — is the perfect dish if you are after something both sweet and savory!

2. What other restaurant could have the ravioli plate down… of course it’s going to be Perbacco’s sister restaurant — Gnocco! I was able to catch this ravioli dish when it was listed as a special. Honestly there isn’t a better filling for a ravioli than either pumpkin or butternut squash… and pair that with some freshly grated parmigiano reggiano cheese and I’m officially in heaven!

3. Here we go… exactly what I was just talking about. The Butternut Tortelloni with Roast Italian Chestnuts, Sage and Parmigiano from Crispo in Meatpacking is done perfectly! And you know that this will be available to you since it wasn’t on a special menu! Yum Yum Yum I just love butternut! Super sweet, savory, and in a way totally hits that spot the same way comfort food does!

4. And in fourth place is a more classic Ravioli Al Formaggio — a ravioli filled with cheese in a pink sauce. I loved how the small West Village trattoria cooked up this dish! Malatesta Trattoria doesn’t take reservations, but your 2 hour wait will be worth it — the prices are dirt cheap and you will be saying “yum” between every single bite!

5. A hot-spot where New Yorkers could spot the Kardashians while they were filming their latest season of Kourtney and Kim Take New York, the restaurant is also known as Asellina located on Park Avenue (and can be considered in the neighborhood of Murray Hill). But the chef at this restaurant put together one heck of a special featuring a truffled ravioli… can you see the truffle shavings? They weren’t cheap with the real-deal — forget truffle oil!

6. Bar Pitti was the most recent place I ordered a ravioli dish and it was the most perfect option I could have picked! The ravioli was light and fluffy and stuffed with spinach and cheese — poured over top was a tasty butter and sage sauce that had me licking my lips! It’s a no reservations and cash only type of joint so be prepared! The wait goes fast and you’ll love the pushy (/busy) Italian employees!

Fried Mac & Cheese at The Diner

Diners are always such fun places to eat at — you never know what will be on the menu. The Diner is located on 14th Street and 9th ave, right on the boarder of the neighborhoods Chelsea and Meatpacking. I can’t tell you how many times I have walked by this neighborhood diner, but I have yet to eat here until this past weekend when a friend was in town.

My friend Brittany and I arrived fairly early for a Sunday morning. When we got to The Diner around 11 a.m. we were seated instantly, but by the time we left not a single table was available! Brunch in New York City typically starts past noon and can go until 5 p.m. Can you imagine?

That’s the beauty of New York City weekends, no matter where you go, you’ll be able to order eggs and pancakes until the restaurant starts to serve dinner. But at a diner, that’s every day of the week — you can order dinner at breakfast, and breakfast at dinner!

Maybe I’m a little behind on this specific food trend, but this weekend was my first time I tried fried mac and cheese balls! Even though this was my first time having this insanely fantastic food, I think I was spoiled by The Diner’s version of this food fad.

The fried mac and cheese balls tasted phenomenal, but when you dunk the bite into their own personal cheese dip that’s when you are truly blown away! The rich, creamy cheese dip adds fantastic texture and flavor to the already crispy, creamy, cheesy mac and cheese balls. Maybe it was because we were probably the first order of the day, but the fried part of the food wasn’t greasy at all! In fact, they didn’t even feel like a guilty pleasure.

I’m really curious as to how to make these at home. But I know even if I mastered the fried mac & cheese ball portion, I would never be able to replicate the best part of The Diner’s dish — the cheese to dunk the balls in.

(For all you Penn Staters out there… The cheese sauce tasted exactly like the cheese topping from The Dark Horse’s cheese fries! I still think they have the best cheese fries in the world! Not even a New York City restaurant has been able to live up to the dive bar’s unhealthy side dish.)

Tello’s Ristorante

Last night I had met up with a very close family friend for dinner. I can’t get over that our families have been friends for over a century!

We decided to stay in Chelsea for some Italian food, and his friend recommended Tello’s on the corner of 20th Street and 8th Avenue… a 7 minute walk from my apartment.

I had scouted out the review online a week in advance and of course I eyed down the menu one too many times. And I couldn’t wait to try out this Italian restaurant. After all, it’s always a treat to discover something new/old that’s in my neighborhood!

Immediately when you walk into the space, you’ll notice that it’s similar to a Ma and Pop’s place — with red checkered table clothes and old black and white family photos covering the walls, you knew right away that wearing jeans is totally acceptable here.

the best calamari

As I eyed down the crowd the scene was clearly a mix of folks — from a high-power career-looking woman with her husband still in his work clothes and their typical 12 year old child playing video games at the dinner table. To a group of men giggling, gossiping, and overall just loving their company. To intimate dates spread evenly throughout the restaurant. I loved that this restaurant plays music, but doesn’t blast it. With the high ceilings you’d think that the restaurant would get obnoxiously loud, but it doesn’t!

This is the perfect place to: have a meal without screaming across the table to talk with your date, bring your kids to, dine out casually, and of course to enjoy good food.

To start, we ordered the calamari which was brought out so quickly I didn’t even get a chance to eat my bread. After squeezing the lemon on top, then dunking a piece into the red sauce, I realized how fresh and perfectly seasoned and cooked this fish was. Not only was the fish fresh and perfectly cooked, the red sauce added a lovely zing of heat. I’d give the calamari an A+ in my book!

food at tello

The menu has a large selection of dishes to pick from… it was a good thing I scouted out the menu before arriving. By the time the waiter asked what I would want for my entree I knew I could tell him the Porcini Ravioli (I know, I’m on a mushroom and ravioli kick this week). He also said that the dish was “fantastic.” So of course, I had to order it! My family friend, Dennis, ordered another pasta dish: Rigatoni Tello which included pasta with sweet sausage, tomatoes, peas, and zucchini.

The ravioli was incredible! I love creamy pasta dishes and when it includes mushrooms it is even better! And that’s just what this dish had — lots of mushrooms! Every bite was filled with a cheesy, creamy, and mushroom flavors that all fused so beautifully together.

Dennis loved his pasta dish too! He gobbled it down so fast I had to eat a little faster to catch up.

My only complaint about dinner was that the food was so hot when it came out, I had to let it cool off for a bit before I could take my first bite… It’s not a large complaint in any way, but I was totally tortured by the most delicious smells coming from my plate and I knew I couldn’t eat it right away!

Taking Mom to Shake Shack

Shake Shack Madison Square Park A few weekends ago my mom came to visit me in the city. We spent our Saturday walking around — it was such a nice day and there was no way we were spending it inside. I actually haven’t walked around the city as much as we did since I first moved to the Big Apple. We really worked up an appetite, and when that happens there’s only one place for us to end up at — Shake Shack!!!!

I have taken both of my parents to the Madison Square Park location (aka the original location) and even my picky eater of a father demolished his Shack Burger. (He’s not exactly a picky eater but he loves things to be cooked and prepared in a traditional way.)

Here’s my mom with our Shake Shack lunch!
